Here's the highlights of this episode of the podcast:

Family titles builds a restrictive hierarchical mindset. At least in the Asian culture, we strictly follow a family title rule where we must call elders by their title to show respect. However, one downside from this is that it builds a distance between us and the elders. It makes us think that the elders are always above us and we can hardly have a close relationship with them.

Youth and elders should be mutual supporters. The main reason why Andrew thinks that there shouldn't be a distance between a youth and elders is because they should learn from each other. When we are born, we learn from the adults because their knowledge are more valuable. However as years go by, the tide changes and the youth may now have more valuable knowledge than the elders do. The distance and hierarchy made it hard for the elders to approach us or for us to teach the elders. Without that, we will be able to learn and grow from each others.

We would allow our children to call us by names but Verene has her preference. While we both agreed on allowing our children to call us by our names, Verene prefers to have her child call her by the mom title at early stages before exposing her to this idea of name calling. She just prefers her children to call her mom because she feels the intimacy within the mom title.

It's still important to prevent our children running around calling others by their name. While we are fine with our kids calling us by our names, we understand that not everyone is comfortable with this. We will need to take on the responsibility to educate our children about respecting everyone's preferences. Perhaps, they can ask for permission before calling others by their name.
